The next generation of Boxcryptor is one step closer and we would like to invite you to try the new Boxcryptor Technical Preview. This new Boxcryptor has been developed by taking into consideration the great learning and feedback we have gathered from our current and potential users, as well as our own experiences with our product and where we see it going. Among many new features, the official new Boxcryptor will offer easier and better collaboration options that are extremely important for teams in business environments and for private users who would like to share access to specific files with others without having to share their private passwords. Also, for companies the new version will offer options to set policies, have a master key in order to have access to the encrypted information when necessary, and much more.
Some of the new Boxcryptor features and improvements that you can already experience in this Technical Preview are:
- Easier access to your files: there are no special Boxcryptor folders and multiple drives as the current 1.x versions have. There will only be one Boxcryptor drive where you can access all your encrypted files.
- Secure sharing of file access: you don’t have to share your private password with others to share access to your files with the new Boxcryptor. Your private password will always stay secret, even when sharing access to single files or folders with others. Your private password will never be transferred.
- Group function: in the technical preview you will be able to use our group function: simply share your files with your whole team with one single click. You can also create groups and add and delete members.
- Easier access to your files: there are no special Boxcryptor folders and multiple drives as the current 1.x versions have. There will only be one Boxcryptor drive where you can access all your encrypted files.
Other features coming soon are:
- Company Account with Master Key: a company will be able to create a company account which offers additional features such as a master key, which gives the possibility to decrypt all files that have been created by the company members (employees). This allows the company to always have access to all the company files even in complicated situations (e.g. when an employee leaves the company). Moreover, it will be able to have a Reset Password Functionfor its members and to define policies (e.g. minimum password length).
- Boxcryptor Business users will have a centralized administration and billing.
Please note that Boxcryptor remains a zero-knowledge software and we don’t have access to your keys or passwords. Any information we receive from you is encrypted and protected by your password which never leaves your device or gets transferred. Please make sure to remember your password or keep a safe copy.

Requirements:
- .NET 4.0 (will be installed during installation)
- Windows Vista or above. (XP is not supported in the technical preview, but will be in the final release).

- If there’s something wrong execute Boxcryptor with command line argument /debug. A file called Boxcryptor.svclog will be placed on your desktop. Please send this file to our support at support@boxcryptor.com
Technical Preview – Android
Our Technical Preview for Android only includes basic upload and download features, and is only available for Dropbox (but also several accounts at a time) and local storage. Please also notice that we have only a very limited error handling which means that you do not get (detailed) error messages if you try to execute a function which is not yet available or the if the app crashes.

Special Upgrade Offer
We want our current Boxcryptor users to know that the current existing 1.x versions will remain available and will continue to be supported for 12 months after the official release of the next generation of Boxcryptor (Mid-May 2013 estimated release).
Also, we want to share that the new Boxcryptor will have a different pricing model. Besides the free version which we will still offer, the new Boxcryptor generation will switch to a subscription model starting from 3€ per user per month (private use) for the paid licenses. For existing Boxcryptor customers we will have the following special upgrade offers. Nevertheless we will still offer a free version for our private users.

These collaborative features take Boxcryptor well beyond its encfs roots. Will the new version provide at least limited compatibility with encfs? In particular, can I still access my files from a Linux/UNIX host?Thanks,– Adam
Hi Adam,Unfortunately we do not plan a Linux version at the moment as we simply have too few users on Linux. If you need compatibility with EncFS, you can simply continue to use our existing 1.x versions of BoxCryptor which will still be available in the future.Best,Robert
@Robert Ok thanks, will do. And, for the record, I’m not a some Linux evangelist. It’s that my Network Attached Storage device runs Linux, and it was handy to have it sync with cloud providers via. boxcryptor.

@Juha: No, it will still be available in the App Stores and you will be able to use it also after the 12 months. We simply cannot promise you to provide support or release new updates.

Ich bin Bestandskunde und hatte mir einen Lizenzschlüssel gekauft.Das Abo-Modell finde ich in diesem Fall sehr unpassend, denn es wird mir ja keine "dauernde" Dienstleistung angeboten (wie Speicherplatz im Netz o.ä.) bzw. beim Hersteller entstehen keine "dauernden" Kosten pro Kunde. Boxcryptor verkauft die Software einmal und hat dann keine dauernden Fixkosten mehr (denn ggf. Support oder Kosten der Weiterentwicklung gehören nicht dazu, die muss jeder Softwareentwickler tragen).Vielmehr wurde eine offene Verschlüsselungslösung (EncFS) in eine komfortable Softwarelösung und Apps integriert – dafür war ich bereit zu zahlen. Aber für ein Softwareupdate mit einer zusätzlichen Sharingfunktion als ABO zu verkaufen – geht gar nicht. Ich bin jedenfalls nach dem Softwareupdate weg. Die Aussage, wir unterstützen auch die 1.xx für ein paar Monate weiter, reicht da einfacht nicht. Dann hätte man eine zusätzliche "Enterprise"-Version einführen sollen, aber die Entwicklung der per Einmal-Zahlung zu kaufenden "Privat"-Version nicht abkoppeln und beenden sollen.
sorry but you lost me at "create account". That may be vital for the sharing procedure (which btw is nothing I’m keen on). But what really put’s me off is that my encrypted files are depending on some login procedure. So basically when the BC website pulls the plug I have to wave bye to my AES-256 encrypted files? Up the price, make the social blx optional and let me use it to manage my EncFS Volumes.:)Because that’s what BC is (or was?) to me: a GUI for file encryption.
Ich bin auch Bestandskunde und habe etliche Firmenlizenzen gekauft.Ich kann meinem Vorredner Peter da nur zustimmen in allen Punkten. Das neue Lizenzmodell ist sehr unpassend. Für uns lag gerade in der platform- und anbieterunabhängigen Lösung der große Zugewinn.Ich bin immer wieder bereit für eine solche Lösung nach Bedarf Geld auszugeben. Ein Abo-Modell ohne wirklichen Mehrwert kann ich nicht unterstützen und werde kein Update mehr einführen.
Je länger ich darüber nachdenke desto mehr rege ich mich auf. Klar kann ich die Version 1.x weiterhin nutzen, zumindest Heute. Aber was ist in drei Jahren? Ändert Apple etwas am iOS oder Dropbox an seiner API läuft Boxcryptor vielleicht nicht mehr. Wenn ich in 1-2 Jahren mal ein Update für 10€ hätte kaufen müssen wäre das absolut OK, aber 3€ im Monat??? Klar, es gibt noch ne Freie Version, aber ich habe die Unlimited Personal für Mac und iOS gekauft, insbesondere wegen der Dateinamenverschlüsselung und der Möglichkeit unbegrenzt Laufwerke zu erstellen.Euer neues Lizenzmodel geht in der Entwicklung an allen privaten Anwendern vorbei. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen das ihr bisher auch nicht besonders viel Geld verdient habt, aber das lag eher an den Lizenzkosten. Der iOS App-Store zeigt es doch. Für 34,99 € würde keiner Angy Birds kaufen, für 2,99 € wurde es tausendfach verkauft. Für mich ist Boxcryptor jetzt eine tickende Zeitbombe und ich muss schnell etwas neues suchen bevor eure Apps (1.x) nicht mehr auf meinen Devices läuft.
Ich ärgere mich auch sehr über das neue Abo-Modell. Die 30 Euro für Version 1 habe ich als Privatnutzer wirklich gerne bezahlt, aber monatliche Abogebühren kommen für mich nicht in frage. Ich hoffe ihr überdenkt das Ganze noch einmal. Ich werde mich wohl oder übel nach Alternativen umschauen müssen…
Ich bin auch extrem enttäuscht von dem neuen Lizenzmodell und werde sicher nicht upgraden. Ich habe immerhin für die iOS Version und die Mac/Windows Version fast 40€ bezahlt und jetzt bekomme ich bald keine Updates mehr?! Hätte ich das vorher gewusst, hätte ich mein Geld anders angelegt.Für eine neue "Major Version" noch einmal Geld zu verlangen ist ja nichts außergewöhnliches mehr (siehe zB 1Password). Aber eine monatliche Gebühr, ohne dass die wirtschaftlich gerechtfertigt ist (ihr habt ja nicht mehr Kosten dadurch, dass mehr Leute eure Software verwenden), ist eine Frechheit. Ich werde mich jedenfalls nicht "melken" lassen.
Schade. Kann mich den Kommentaren nur anschliessen. Anstatt eine Nische zu nutzen (plattformübergreifende GUI für EncFS): hier wieder mal eine typisch deutsche Lösung: das Produkt so lange ummodeln, bis es mit der ursprünglichen Software nicht mehr kompatibel ist und verkünden, man habe das Rad erfunden. Deckel drauf, in grossen Buchstaben "Social" auf die Packung, und dann erwarten, dass die Leute einem die Tür einrennen. Viel Glück dabei. Gerade bei einem solchen Produkt wie Datenverschlüsselung (wenn es nicht Open Source ist) heisst die Basis "Vertrauen". Und wenn ich das Gefühl habe, jemand versucht absichtlich und unnötigerweise mich von einem Produkt abhängig zu machen (vom Abo-Modell mal ganz abgesehen), dann tue ich mich damit schwer. Ich bin froh, noch einmal in den Blog geschaut zu haben, bevor ich den Bestellen Button geklickt habe. (bzw: gar nicht froh, leider)
