Introducing BoxCryptor Classic

First of all we want to thank everyone that has taken the time to share their feedback with us in regards to the technical preview of our new Boxcryptor generation. It is very important for us to listen to you as users and customers in order to provide a product and a service which fulfills your needs and meets your requirements.

Since the release of the technical preview of the new Boxcryptor generation we have received lots of great feedback concerning the improvements and new features, which has been very encouraging for our entire team. But, at the same time, we received concerns from existing users regarding our plan to drop support for the 1.x versions 12 months after the official release of the new Boxcryptor. We understand that some Boxcryptor users are 100% happy with the current 1.x versions and that there is a legitimate interest to keep them as their cloud security solution of choice.

Therefore we will continue to offer the 1.x versions, which will be available as “Boxcryptor Classic” on our new website, and we will continue to offer regular support– independent from the release of the new Boxcryptor generation.

We are convinced that this is the best solution for existing and potential customers who do not want to move to the new Boxcryptor and are happy with the current versions. We want to give our users the possibility to choose the product which best fulfills their needs, and if our existing 1.x version is the right solution for you, then you will still be able to download it and purchase it on our website. We will also continue to offer support and updates for it so you can continue using it also for the long term. For example, we will submit a new version of our Windows RT app to Microsoft within the next days: Besides SkyDrive, our Windows RT app then also includes Dropbox as a storage provider.

For those users who would like to take advantage of benefit from our new features such as secure file access sharing without revealing your password, creating groups options, having a master key, and more, then our new Boxcryptor will be the perfect solution for you.

  1. Wow – great news! Thanks a lot! I purchased the personal unlimited version before, and I really love it, and was so frustrated to read about the new subscription model, but now I’m happy – version 1 has everything I need 🙂

  2. @Jamy: Yes, that means that Boxcryptor Classic (the 1.x branch) will receive updates (e.g. for bugfixes) in the future.

  3. Great news. I purchased BoxCryptor (before it was free) solely because it used EncFS, so I could keep my data if BoxCryptor was no longer around. I have no desire to move to a proprietary format.

  4. Hi everybody, thank you very much for your great feedback. We are very happy to hear that you like this solution.

  5. I’m very happy that Boxcryptor Classic will continue to get updates, as it works perfectly for my needs as is. Thanks you!

  6. I just found this software and after finding out the subscription model, makes me hold the buy since i really dont know if there will be future version of the "classic" i mean it wont stay in version 1.x forever right?

  7. Hi Luis, our 1.x versions will just be renamed to "BoxCryptor Classic" and we will keep on supporting this version also in the future (regardless of Version 2.0).

  8. yeah +1, I would also like to ask the same as Luis, then some more:
    – how long (for now) do you then for now plan to sell/support boxcryptor classic?
    – are/will there be any plans for non-bugfix upgrades? they can be paid upgrades too…
    – what if your boxcryptor classic continues to outsell boxcryptor 2.0?
    – i would love to get external key mode in ios/android apps like on windows for boxcryptor classic… any chance in “new system”? technically don’t see a problem…

btw. you are probably guessing right, most of us paid 1.x users are not “so much” interested in sharing features, but are interested in keeping paid-once-off model (plus eventual paid upgrades), I am guessing for us keeping the compatibility with encfs will be also important, really loosing linux support in 2.x is ugly, also we LOVE open standards, especially when it comes to security / encryption.

  9. Hi Luis, we will continue to support BoxCryptor Classic and offer updates (especially for bugfixes), but this does not mean that we will offer the same big updates and new features as in the new BoxCryptor generation. E.g. we might be offering the new BoxCryptor version on a new platform (e.g. Windows Phone) but we cannot promise that there will also be a new Windows Phone app for BoxCryptor Classic.

  10. A windows phone 8 – Boxcryptor 1.x app would be much appreciated! It does not have to have many features, it would be awesome to just be able to open the encrypted files on the go! A port from windows 8 (RT)-App to Windwos Phone app should not be that difficult, especially if the app comes only with basic functions. Windows-users would really appreciate a windows phone 8 app.. now I use Boxcryptor on Windows 8 (desktop), Windows RT but unfortunately, I’m not able to access my encrypted files on my Windows Phone 8 😦
But thank you anyway for the Windows 8 RT app and that you’ll continue to support Boxcryptor 1.x!!! 🙂

  11. With the rename of v1.x to “BoxCryptor Classic”, will those of us with existing unlimited licenses be forced to purchase new v1.x “Classic” licenses? The hope of course is that we are simply rolled into being users of “Classic”. I didn’t see this question posted in the comments so I figured why not put it out there. Thanks!

  12. Seems to me there are two clear markets here with different, indeed slightly opposing needs. The home market wants a simple solution where they are not going to mess up implementation and lose their data, they want access across all their devices and they want to pay a one off fee. (they also want to know there is a long term commitment) The business market wants a solution their IT department can roll out and support with plenty of options for multi users and collaboration etc… they won`t mind paying a regular fee for support and they can factor it into their budgets.
Final point, I would be willing to pay for classic version for use at home, but only if you bring out support for Windows Phone 8.

  13. @Dominik:
Continued support for BoxCryptor Classic means that we will make sure that the existing BoxCryptor Classic applications are bug-free and are properly working. Completely new platforms like Windows Phone will very likely only be supported in BoxCryptor 2.0 as they require a lot of development effort (even though we already have an app for RT). That’s all I can promise at the moment.

    @Kirk:
All v1.x licenses are valid for BoxCryptor Classic. Only the name will change.

  14. @BoxCryptorTeam: Thanks a lot guys for your decision to keep BoxCryptor 1.x alive! It is a rare and joyful experience to have a company listen to their customer’s wishes!

Since I am very interested in further development of 1.x, I would be willing to pay for major 1.x updates from time to time in the future.

    Danke schön!

  15. Unfortunately I wasn’t planning on moving to a subscription model of BoxCryptor so this is really good news! Love the current BoxCryptor model and will continue supporting it on an upgrade/feature basis.

I’m not sure, but I don’t think I’m alone in saying; I want to have a sense of ownership, and when I pay for something such as software even though the physical media no longer exist I still have the file somewhere on my hard drive and can use it as I please, this cannot be applied to a subscription based model which once you stop participating in you no longer have access to anything. Sorry not for me.

    Thanks,
    Peter

    Robert

  18. Great that boxcryptor 1.0 / classic will receive support and updates in the future!
Otherwise I would regret having bought this software..

I got a FEATURE REQUEST for the iOS-App:
Right now there is no distinction between folders and files and everything displayed in alphabetical order.
Would it be possible to display them like in windows where folders are first from a-z and then files from a-z?

    Thanks
